Wednesday, August 20, 2008 I was on medical leave last 2 days due to tonsils inflammation and basically slept throughout the last 2 days. Anyway, the company panel doctor referred me to SGH (Singapore General Hospital) ENT (Ear Nose Throat) Centre for a specialist checkup. This is because I am always having recurring sore throat, with flu and fever accompanying.
Thankfully, the clinic assistant managed to secure the specialist appointment at 8.50am today. After waiting about 40 minutes, was finally attended to by Senior Consultant, Dr Chan Yew Meng. Dr Chan did a nose scope on me and it hurt. He mentioned that I had some blockage at the back of my throat or tonsils. This means that I will not be able to breathe properly while sleeping. In short, I do not get quality sleep and will always be tired no matter how many hours I sleep. As such, Dr Chan recommended for me to do a Sleep Study. It's the first time I heard such a treatment. Apparently, the subject will have some sensor on while sleeping and after removing this sensor, the expert should be provide some 10 over pages report on one's sleeping conditions. An example is, at which posture does the subject stop breathing. Doing a Sleep Study at SGH will cost about $1000, hence, Dr Chan recommended for me to do in private which should cost about $300. I was wondering why private practice is so much cheaper when Dr Chan informed that if I were to do at SGH, I have to stay overnight at the hospital and the report will be much more detailed. Of course, the $1000 comprises of 1-night hospital stay. If I engage a private specialist, she will come to my place 2 hours before I sleep, put on the sensor for me, teach me how to remove the sensor when I wake up the next day. She will collect this sensor back and come up with a Sleep Study report for me. Well, I really learn something new today. Anyway, my next appointment with Dr Chan is in a month's time and I need to have my Sleep Study done by then. Think I will do my Sleep Study a week before my next ENT appointment. As my flu infection has not cleared, I was prescribed some 2-week course of anti-biotics and a bottle of nasal spray. Was finally able to leave SGH about 11am. It has been a long morning! |
