It is Singapore's birthday today. 43 years now, and more to go.
National Day this year seems to mark a bleak start for us, Singaporeans. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, in his National Day message, announced our 2008 GDP growth forecast to be between 4% and 5%. This was down from an earlier estimate of between 4% and 6%.
Just a month ago, analysts had announced that our local inflation will hit a 7% all-time high. What with the global inflation and a slowdown in US economy, Singapore's growth will be challenging.
As most Singaporeans are anticipating an impending recession, many has been very cautious in their spending. Albeit the gloomy economy, our government has been trying to encourage us.
Rather than being despondent, let us stride forward to hold the fort for Singapore. Afterall, we have strived for and achieved much in the last 43 years.
I may not be a patriotic citizen but at least I am grateful for our nation's peace and security; to be able to continue with our daily activities.
