Been quite a week. And I never knew that resignation can taste so sweet. The relief and joy I felt when I tendered was indescribable. My last day is on Thursday, 15 December 2005. And guess what? I will be starting my new job on Friday. Yah, I know there is no break in between but the company needs me to join them ASAP before their staff start going on leave for Christmas and there will be no one to guide me then.
I mentioned before that I did not want to leave the company in the past cos I had a great team of colleagues whom I worked with and also a very understanding Senior Manager who is like a mentor to me. Unfortunately, due to some restructuring in the company, I switched department to do business development for tourism. Business development is fine but I am not exactly interested in tourism and I felt a little uncomfortable with my new boss. She is our Senior Manager in Marketing & Communications and very inexperienced new. I was already contemplating leaving though I rejected 2 job offers in the past 2 weeks. But what transpired between me and my HR Senior Manager on Wednesday was the last straw.
Mr HR: Boss (referring to my Managing Director) is very pissed off cos you have been taking many days MC so you better be careful.
Me: I have not been very healthy since I joined this company but I have been taking supplements to boost my immune system.
Mr HR: That's not the point Jane. The management does not think you should be taking so many days MC in any case. Moreover, your MC days always fall on the day after a weekend or public holiday or after your Annual Leave. Muiling (my new boss) and me have been observing. You usually take MC on Tuesdays.
Now, I was really pissed off. Stupid Black Indian Asshole! First, I just joined Marketing department for less than 2 weeks so how can Muiling observe that about me? And most importantly, who in the right mind will go plan which day he/she wanna fall sick, so how would I know that I always happen to fall sick on which day and there is a pattern? This is total madness.
Me: I really don't know about that and I don't control which day I want to fall sick.
Mr HR: The management does not think so. You better be careful. The next time you are going to take MC, Boss will surely blow up so you better watch out.
I nodded my head and left his table.
I felt sick. My dear professional and experienced HR Manager was indirectly telling me that the next time I gonna be falling sick, even if it means crawling to work, I still got to come to work. For the first time in my life, I came across such HR personnel. Yes, I was appalled. Do they have such practice back in India. Perhaps so.
Oh yah, did I mention that he is Indian Nationale (and no I am not racist) and have been in Singapore for less than a year. Before he joined us, our Managing Director mentioned that we gonna be having a very experienced Senior Manager in HR joining us. Perhaps this is what they call experienced. I was disgusted. There had been other incidents and occasions during his stint in this company which had reflected how unprofessional inexperienced he was. One thing noted though was that he acted only according to Boss's instructions (which may not always be right as Boss only thinks in macro and won't be awared of HR policies in depth) and as a HR personnel, he would not think from the staff's perspective. Well, I guess his so-called experience is probably valuable in India where there ain't much Human Rights to speak of anyway.
But excuse me, I am Chinese. A Singaporean Chinese.
