Shirley's Birthday & Christmas Gathering

Had a belated Christmas gathering with Phyllis, Florence and Shirley on Thursday. It was also to celebrate Shirley's birthday which was on 23rd December. Because I was overseas then, we could only do this gathering plus celebration on 28th. Oh well, better late than never. It was so much fun meeting up with them after so long!

Visted Hog's Breath Cafe @ Chijmes.
Service sucks.
As seen, their slogan is "Food with Attitude!".
We reached at 8pm and food was only served at 9pm.
To make it worse, the waiter was actually quite rude when we asked why the food took so long.
Now, this is what I called real BAD attitude!

Our combo appetizer finally arrived after an hour long wait.

Anyway, it was great!

Back from Saigon

Just touched down not long ago. Have not even unpacked. Kinda dread going back to office tomorrow but can't help it. My mobile phone was already ringing non-stop today while I was still in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC).

Got some rashes on my legs and I suspect it is due to the not-so-clean seats on my SQ airplane. My skin is very sensitive even to a little dust. Applied cream on both legs and I feel as if both legs are burning now. ARGH! Anyway, all in all, this has been a fruitful trip. Did more sightseeing and exploring than shopping. Generally, modern-day clothes in HCMC are not so pretty and more pricey than Singapore. However, tailor made your own clothes and they are very cheap. I think it is due to the high taxes imposed, hence imported clothes to Vietnam are generally more expensive. Well, I did tailor-made a Vietnamese Ao-Sai, a Cheong Sam and a dress. Workmanship is quite good.

I will share more when I upload the pictures and blog more about the whole trip. Meanwhile, can share some interesting facts I gathered.

Christmas Day (i.e. 25 December 2006) is not a holiday in Vietnam.
Vietnamese exchange water melon instead of oranges during their New Year.
For 2007 only, the Vietnamese New Year is a day earlier than our Lunar New Year.
Vietnamese food is either very salty or extremely sweet (for Singaporeans' taste bud).
Most Vietnamese can't speak English.
Beer or liquor is damn cheap in Vietnam. A can of Heineken beer costs about S$1.
HCMC has a population of 8.3 million and this city is infested with 4 million motor bikes.
HCMC has certain specialised streets selling certain products. E.g. you can find a street specalising in mobile phone, or a street specialising in funeral services etc.
There is no real countdown Christmas Party in HCMC. Everyone just hangs around the Notre Dame Cathedral.
Vietnamese women don't seem to fancy their own country's men as per a few conversations with ladies there.
It is a miracle to be able to cross any busy street as the motor bikes just keep heading towards you even though the traffic is to the pedestrians' way.

Right. Should stop here. Can't recall anymore. May update if I can remember any more fact. Oh yah, did I mention that the Immigration Officer at the Customs scare me?

Officer looked at my passport and pronounced my name wrongly.
I corrected Officer.
Officer: You married?
Me: Unmarried?
Officer: How many children?
Me: No children. Unmarried.
Officer: Married?
Me: No. Single.
Officer: Then many many boyfriends.
Me (exasperated): No, no boyfriend.
Officer: Many many boyfriends.
Me (forced a smile): No sir. No boyfriend.
Then he stamped on my passport and let me go.

I was kinda freaked out. I felt so much like yelling at him that it was none of his business if I am married or single or whatever! But.... I was scared too. What if he does not let me pass the immigration and I can't catch my flight? Oh well, just my luck!

Hours before my flight

It's less than 10 hours before I board my plane to Ho Chi Minh City. I can't even feel any excitement. Am dead beat. Knocked off at 9pm and probably still gonna be logging on to check company emails while overseas.

December is a busy month for dealers though not for us. And because of partners rushing their numbers, my mobile phone has been ringing non-stop. It doesn't help that a number of my company staff (other departments) have been on leave and when administrators can't reach them, my handphone's cries started.

I admit that I am slightly frustrated today due to ever-piling last minute work to clear before I can head for my vacation. Sure hope that I will feel more relaxed and relieved when up in the skies. Meanwhile, gonna go check my air tickets and ensure passport is in my bag!

Christmas Dinners

Met up with Meiqing, Peiyan and Valerie for a Christmas dinner last night. A pity Qiumei can't join us as she is sick. Poor girl. The last time we were supposed to meet up for Val's birthday, she was ill too. Must be the chilling weather!

Anyway, has been quite a busy day today. Spent some time with Ai Hwa and Sok Hui decorating our work stations so give it a most festive feel. Quite good though we did not win the best decor prize. It has been a really fun experience donning up our work place, especially when we did it so last minute.

The whole department then headed for Christmas Dinner at Plaza Cafe located in Raffles, The Plaza. Love the variety and the spread is really sumptuous. Had champange too. This will be the last Christmas Kei, our Department Head, is spending Christmas with us. He has been transferred to the Regional Office and we are expecting a new boss effective 1 February 2007. The newly appointed Head has quite a beefy record with the company and was heading the Philippines office prior to this current posting. Sure hope that we can work well for him. Keeping our fingers crossed that we can as this will be the best Christmas or Chinese New Year present for all of us. Ever. Meanwhile, hope that Kei excels in his new appointment. Lucky dude must be thinking that he can finally get away from us devils. Haha!

Actually, we all know Kei is really a pretty good boss though his teasings can really be endless at times. Nonetheless, jokes aside, what matters is the end results and the fact remains that he has brought the department to a height where no other profit centre manager has. And I have certainly learn a lot from him. Gonna miss my boss man!

Saigon... Here I come!

It's confirmed. I am going Ho Chi Minh City from 22nd - 26th December. Yes, for Christmas! With Mummy... who else? :)

Finally got my air tickets to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), formerly known as Saigon. It is the largest city, the greatest port, and the commercial and industrial center of Vietnam.

I have heard from friends that there are many tailor shops in HCMC, especially in District 1 area, that will tailor an ao-dai in 24 hours or less. So, I promise to get myself a gorgeous tailor-made Vietnamese ao-dai ( say ow-yai ) for USD20 or less. Of course, I probably can get them off the rack from Ben Tanh Market at less than USD10 but nothing will fit more beautifully on a girl than one that is tailor-made right?

It has been ~~raining~~ pouring islandwide for the past 3 days. Sure hope that the weather in HCMC is drier than Singapore. I don't wish to spoil my vacation by staying in the hotel due to the heavy rain. Other than shopping and eating at Ben Tanh where my hotel is conveniently located near to, I look forward to visiting the Cu Chi Tunnels or Mekong Delta. But if it's wet weather there, my plans may be foiled. Keeping my fingers crossed that the 5 days at HCMC will be a fun-filled and fulfilling one.

Cab-sick!

I declare that...

I get cab-sick (if there is such a word) easily!

During the course of my work, I travel around in cabs. Some days I actually take more than 10 cabs a day. Yes, it's amazing and many a time, when possible, I try to plan my week such that I only travel out 2 to 3 days a week. As for the remaining 1 to 2 days, I will be more than happy crouched over my laptop clearing emails in office.

I stay beside an MRT station and it is really convenient for me. By taking the MRT, I can reach Orchard in 20 minutes, without having the hassle of finding a carpark or finding myself stuck in a traffic jam at CTE. Needless to say, I love moving around in MRT. Yes, sometimes there are no seats, in fact, it's many a time, however, I still enjoy standing in the cabin and watching people around me. There are many interesting people around and I love to see how different people dress.

During the peak rush hours, I get to see both ladies and men donned in their working attires, all looking smart. The varieties in their fashion style intrigue me daily. And during the off-peak hours, you see more outlandish dressing. Much louder too. Can be pretty interesting and certainly keep me well entertained throughout the journey to anywhere in this little sunny island.

Anyway, back to cabs. I have never dreaded taking cabs, till recently. Probably due to the late working hours, I will always grab a cab home at night. Unfortunately, at night, with an empty stomach without dinner, the cab rides home have mostly been a torture to me. I will feel nauseous as the cab drivers will usually move a little and then jerk to a stop, all thanks to the heavy traffic at the infamous CTE expressway.

Sometimes, coupled with the nausea, there was the throbbing headache too. It is really insufferable and I wish I can stop feeling so terrible. Strangely though, in the day time when I take cabs, this does not happen. I reckon it's because the day traffic during office hours is not as bad. Of course there are times when during the day, I suffer from this 'cab-sickness' too.

Lately, I have been forcing myself to clear work before 7pm so that I can catch the company shuttle bus to the nearest MRT station to catch the train home. Even when I do work late at times, I will just take a cab to the nearest MRT station then proceed to taking a cab back. Today, after facial, I was tired and just wanted to get home soonest possible. But the thought of calling a cab make me shudder. And so, I headed for the nearest MRT station and journeyed home standing in a crowded MRT cabin.

December is not too stressful a month so I guess not grabbing a cab back at night is still alright. Moreover, I can try not to work late too. Hopefully when January arrives, I will feel more at ease and comfortable in a cab and not be cab-sick. Perhaps I should not go by CTE and just take a longer route back home via Scotts Road then Thomson Road. Some cab drivers can be a real terror and their driving skills suck. It does not help when there is slow traffic and since they are driving a manual vehicle, they have to keep stepping on the clutch. I got to admit that whenever I take Mercedes cab, I don't feel so lousy. Perhaps I should just call for Mercs cab in future and be more comfortable with an auto-geared vehicle.

Well, we shall see. Till then, will try to find remedy for my cab-sickness!

Bollywood Premiere @ Orchard Hotel on 9 December 2006

Cycle & Carriage held their annual Dinner & Dance on Saturday, 9 December 2006 at Orchard Hotel. This year’s theme is Bollywood Premiere with pre-event highlights such as Bollywood Dancers, Henna Painting, Rice Art etc.

Dress code is Bollywood Style and many really dressed to the nines. I was in a turquoise dress and because the dress is flared with no waistline, I had to tie a scarf around my waist so that I won’t look too fat. It also helped to accessorise the dress for a more Bollywood look, ~~hopefully~~.

Festive Shopping and upcoming D&Ds

It's December once more. Christmas is coming and it's the time of joy and celebration. The festive mood is starting to sink into me although work is still busy (but still much better than last month). This is not a good sign as I am beginning to splurge once more.

The company Dinner & Dance is to be held this coming Friday at Mandarin Hotel. Theme is Hollywood Glamour. Sure hope that I will look glamourous enough on that day! Cycle & Carriage Dinner & Dance is on Saturday at Orchard Hotel and the theme is Bollywood night. So interesting! Am kinda looking forward to these two functions though I know the agenda for the latter is to go there to show support. Well, no harm enjoying myself since I gonna show up anymore. And having fun in the process of dolling myself up!

Got myself a maroon tube dress for Hollywood Glamour Night. I had initially wanted to wear my black sling heels I bought from URS about 2 months back but while shopping at Takashimaya earlier, saw a pair of Lorenza maroon sling heels with shimmering front strap, and yes you guess it, I could not resist the temptation. I had seen this maroon heels before at Takashimaya going at $169 and I bought it at $48. Quite a steal I must say. Basically the salesgirl helped me strapped up the sling, I looked at the mirror and asked her to pack it to cashier where I made payment. The whole process was like less than 5 minutes. I am amazing... at SHOPPING! No wonder departmental stores' sales assistants always adore me! Haha!

Anyway, I have already fixed an appointment with my hairstylist to set my hair for this Friday. Am opting for the dolly look with my curls. Sure hope that Tom does a good job else I will kill him. Saturday night for Bollywood Night will be more simple. Got myself a simple blue dress and a shawl. To look more "indian", I got a slave bracelet to accessorise one of my hands.

As for the other hand, may just find an indian makeup artist to do a Mehendi design (a.k.a. Henna Art) for me on Saturday morning. Will style my hair myself as I probably will be stealing some tips from Tom on Friday for styling my hair. By Saturday, I ~~will~~ should be an expert and can set my own hair! I even got myself an "indian-looking" clutch bag for Bollywood Night! Hmm, I must say that for both functions, I indeed had lotsa fun "preparing" and of course, anticipating myself to enjoy both nights. *GRIN*

As mentioned earlier, I went shopping at Takashimaya. There is a 4-Day sales for DBS Takashimaya card holders with additional 10% off. Starts today and I mean to check out the Swatch counter there if there is anything I like. Found a black bangle like watch and fell in love with it. There goes another $120 out of my pocket. Now you know why I say this is the season to splurge? ARGH!
